The photos of headstones below are some of the best examples of the hundreds of photos taken in the cemetery since 2018. Some of the headstones were just below the surface while others were in plain sight. Some stones are too difficult to decipher, like the birth or death date for Alverda Young. Hopefully among the folks viewing these stones someone might decide to take on a little more research into the history of those being remembered.
As a reminder, please never clean a headstone in a historic cemetery. None of these have been cleaned except with water. Abrasive chemicals will only hard the stones especially those of unpolished granite. When in doubt check with the Coalition to Protect Maryland Burial Sites.
Eliza Marlow was first married to John Carroll, and then to Benjamin Marlow. She was also the older sister of Thomas Isaac, A.J. Isaac, and George Isaac of Ellicott City. (Photo Feb. 2018)
Another view of Eliza's headstone, Today the headstone is much more faded and very difficult to read. (Photo Feb. 2018)
John Carroll was the first husband of Eliza (Carroll) Marlow and the grandson of Mary Polton who took ownership of this land in 1779. She and her husband also owned Guilford Mills. (Photo May 2020).
It certainly seems as though Eliza and Benjamin had to bury an infant less than a year old. Eliza died 2 months after her child, known only with the initial of M. A.
Thomas Lemuel Carroll was the son of David Carroll, brother of John Carroll, and guardian of John and Eliza's children after she died. The birth date is calculated from 6 months and 22 days before Thomas died. (Photo May 2020)
Since this was in the style of the JxC stone which proved to be John Carroll by matching the death date with his will, we are making the reach that this stone belonged to his brother Zachariah for which we have no confirmed information. (Photo April 2020)
This stone was very hard to read but it looks like we have an idea of the date, but the more eyes on it the better. We don't know which Young family Alverda was from - any ideas? (Photo Nov. 2019)
This stone is very difficult to read and it is not know how much writing beyond MAM is really there. Perhaps this was the footstone for the infant M.A. Marlow mentioned above, or a different child. (Photo May 2020)
This stone was near the John Carroll and Eliza Marlow area. There are initials of at least "AS" on it but we really do not know who, or what, this means. (Photo May 2018)
On the side of the stone marked "AS" were these presumed initials of HS (is it something other than initials?) (Photo March 2020)
On the reverse of the side of the stone with "AS" were again the presumed initials of HS. It is not known who or what this means. (Photo March 2020)
