The Guilford Quarry Cemetery has grave markers dating back to 1829 belonging to the Polton family of the Guilford area that once owned the Guilford Mills in the 1780s or before. In addition to the Polton family descendants there appear to be a large number of African American burials noted by plain granite stone markers, burials facing east, and vegetation such as vinca and dogwoods. The first headstone we noticed belonged to Eliza Marlow, the wife of John Carroll, who has a fascinating history we are happy to share.
We named it the Guilford Quarry Cemetery due to its very close proximity to the quarry at just over 500 feet away and the majority of the stone markers being granite - many with drill marks. Perhaps another name is more appropriate but for now let's call it the Guilford Quarry Cemetery
